Rummy Scoring, Explained
Plain Rummy's scoring is a straightforward deadwood count on the surface, but a couple of real scoring wrinkles — the going-rummy bonus and how aces get valued — change the final number enough that it's worth walking through several full hands rather than just the value table alone.
Deadwood values, the base of everything
Face cards (jack, queen, king) and tens count 10 each. Number cards 2 through 9 count their own face value. Aces count 1, under the common low-only convention. Every card that isn't part of a completed meld when a hand ends counts against its holder at these values.
Worked example 1: an ordinary hand, one player going out
Player A melds their entire hand and goes out, discarding their final card as part of ending the turn normally. Player B is left holding a king, a 7, and a 3: 10 + 7 + 3 = 20 deadwood. Player A scores the full 20 points — Player B's total leftover deadwood — while Player A's own hand, being completely melded, contributes zero against them.
Worked example 2: three players, deadwood totaled from each
Player A goes out. Player B is left with a queen and a 5: 10 + 5 = 15. Player C is left with two aces and an 8: 1 + 1 + 8 = 10. Player A's score for the hand is the combined deadwood of both other players: 15 + 10 = 25.
Worked example 3: "going rummy" doubling the result
Player A goes out in a single turn, having never laid a single card down on any earlier turn this hand — a "going rummy" finish. Player B's leftover deadwood is 18; Player C's is 12, for a combined 30. Under the going-rummy bonus some tables use, this combined total is doubled: 30 × 2 = 60 points awarded to Player A, rather than the plain 30 a normal finish would have scored from the identical leftover hands.
Worked example 4: one high card outweighing several small ones
Player B ends a hand holding four cards: a king, a 2, a 3, and a 4 — 10 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 19. Player C ends the same hand holding just two cards, but both are face cards: a queen and a jack — 10 + 10 = 20. Despite holding half as many cards, Player C's deadwood is actually higher than Player B's, purely because two face cards outweigh four small numbers combined. Counting cards rather than their point values is the single most common Rummy scoring mistake.
Worked example 5: laying off reducing deadwood before the final count
Player B, before the hand ends, lays off a 6 onto an opponent's already-completed run, and a 9 onto their own completed set, at tables that allow laying off onto either. Without those layoffs, Player B's hand would have totaled 6 + 9 + 4 (a leftover 4) = 19. With both cards successfully laid off, only the 4 remains: 4 points instead of 19 — a meaningful reduction achieved entirely through legal, in-turn play rather than through the final count itself.
Worked example 6: an ace scored flexibly under the alternative convention
Under the less common convention where an ace can count high as well as low, a player ends a hand holding an unmatched ace that could have completed a queen-king-ace run had the hand gone one turn longer. For scoring purposes, though, an unmatched ace simply counts as 1 whichever convention is in use — flexible-value conventions affect what melds are LEGAL to build during play, not what a leftover, unmatched ace is worth once a hand has already ended.
Worked example 7: tracking a running match total across several hands
A player's deadwood scores across four hands: 22, 0 (went out that hand), 35, and 14. Running total: 22 + 0 + 35 + 14 = 71. Since Rummy scores like golf — lower is better — this player compares their 71 against every opponent's own running total once the match's agreed number of hands (or a target score) has been reached, and whoever has accumulated the least deadwood overall wins.
Worked example 8: the whole-pile pickup variant scored the same way, once drawn
A player at a table using the Rummy 500-style whole-pile pickup takes four cards off the discard pile at once, immediately using the bottom card to complete a meld as the rule requires. Once that meld is laid down, the other three picked-up cards join the player's hand normally and are simply counted, if left unmelded at the end, exactly like any other card at its own value — the deadwood math itself doesn't change based on how a card entered a player's hand, only how many cards actually made it into a completed meld before the hand ended.
Worked example 9: a close finish decided entirely by one unlucky leftover card
Two players are neck and neck across a short match. Player A's total deadwood after three hands is 41. Player B's is 40, going into a final hand where both players meld almost everything — Player A ends with zero leftover cards (0 added, final total 41), while Player B is stuck holding one unmatched king (10 added, final total 50). A single face card, unmatched at exactly the wrong moment, is enough to flip a match that had been essentially tied going into the last hand.
The fastest way to total a hand
- Count every unmelded card in each losing player's hand at its own value: 10 for face cards and tens, face value for 2 through 9, and 1 for aces.
- Add every losing player's deadwood together for the round's total.
- Double that total if the winner went out in a single turn without ever laying a card down earlier, and the table is using the going-rummy bonus.
- Add the round's total to a running match score, and compare once the match is complete — lower is better.
