Oh Hell Scoring, Explained
Oh Hell's scoring is unusually binary compared to most trick-taking games — there's no partial credit for coming close to a bid — which means the clearest way to see how it actually plays out is comparing a hand that hits its bid exactly against a nearly identical hand that misses by just one trick.
The standard scoring method
A player who takes EXACTLY the number of tricks they bid scores 10 points plus their bid amount. A player who takes more or fewer tricks than bid — by any margin — scores zero for that hand, full stop.
Worked example 1: an exact bid, rewarded in full
A player bids 4 tricks and takes exactly 4. Score: 10 + 4 = 14 points for the hand.
Worked example 2: missing by just one trick, scoring nothing at all
A different player, same hand, bids 4 tricks but takes only 3 — missing by a single trick. Under the standard method, this scores exactly 0, identical to what a player who bid 4 and took 0 tricks would score. There's no partial credit for "almost" hitting a bid; missing by one is scored exactly the same as missing by four.
Worked example 3: a bid of zero, succeeding
A player bids 0 tricks (a legal bid at any hand size) and genuinely takes none across the entire hand. Score: 10 + 0 = 10 points — smaller than a made bid on more tricks, but a completely legitimate, often safer way to bank points on a weak hand rather than gambling on a higher bid that might miss entirely.
Worked example 4: the alternative per-trick scoring method, compared directly
A separate, real published scoring method awards 1 point per trick actually taken, plus a flat 10-point bonus only if the bid was hit exactly. Replaying the near-miss from example 2 under this method: bid 4, took 3 — the bid wasn't hit, so no 10-point bonus, but the 3 tricks actually taken still score 3 points, rather than the 0 the standard method would award for the identical result. Replaying the exact-bid hand from example 1 under this method: bid 4, took 4 — 4 points for the tricks taken, plus the 10-point bonus for hitting the bid exactly, for 14 points total, identical to the standard method's result in this specific case. The two methods only diverge on missed bids, never on made ones.
Worked example 5: tracking a full deal-size arc across a match
A common match structure deals a shrinking-then-growing number of cards each hand — starting at 10 cards, working down to 1, then back up to 10 again. A player's scores across the "downward" half of the match: 14 (bid 4, made 4), 0 (bid 3, took 2), 10 (bid 0, made it), 14 (bid 4 on a 4-card hand, made it), and 0 (bid 1, took 2 — overbid on the smallest hands still scores exactly like an undershoot). Running total after these five hands: 14 + 0 + 10 + 14 + 0 = 38.
Worked example 6: why the dealer restriction changes what's actually biddable
On a 9-trick hand where the other three players have already bid a combined 6 tricks, "the hook" (if that table is using it) blocks the dealer specifically from bidding 3, since 6 + 3 = 9 would let the total bids exactly match the tricks available. The dealer is free to bid anything else — 0, 1, 2, 4, 5, and so on — just not the one number that would make every player's bid theoretically satisfiable at once. This restriction changes what the dealer's "best" bid actually is compared to a table playing without it, since a dealer forced away from their honestly-assessed best number has to pick the next-best available bid instead.
Worked example 7: two players' scores compared across the same hand
On a single 6-trick hand, Player A bids 2 and takes exactly 2, scoring 10 + 2 = 12. Player B bids 3 but takes 5, overshooting badly, and scores 0 under the standard method despite taking more total tricks than Player A did. This regularly frustrates newer players, who instinctively feel that taking more tricks should count for something — but the entire premise of Oh Hell's scoring is that the bid itself was the actual skill being tested, not simply accumulating tricks, so a badly overshot bid scores worse than a modest, accurately predicted one even though fewer tricks were physically won.
Worked example 8: an entire hand where nobody hits their bid
A tightly-fought 5-trick hand ends with every player missing their bid by at least one trick — this happens fairly often, especially under "the hook," where at least one miss is essentially guaranteed by design. Under the standard method, every player at the table scores exactly 0 for that hand, and the running totals simply carry over unchanged from before it was dealt. This is a completely normal, expected outcome rather than a sign that something went wrong with the scoring — entire zero-sum hands are a routine part of how a full Oh Hell match plays out.
The fastest way to score a hand
- Compare tricks taken to tricks bid for each player individually.
- If they match exactly, award 10 points plus the bid amount (or, under the alternative method, tricks taken plus the 10-point bonus).
- If they don't match at all, award zero under the standard method — or, under the alternative method, award 1 point per trick actually taken with no bonus.
- Confirm before the match starts which of the two scoring methods a table is using, since they only produce different results on a missed bid.
- Add each hand's result to a single running total per player, and compare that total once every hand size in the agreed deal-size sequence has been played.
