Cee-lo Scoring, Explained
Cee-lo's entire scoring system boils down to ranking a single roll of three dice against another roll, but the hierarchy has more tiers than it looks like at first — and one whole category of roll doesn't score at all, on either side, and simply has to be rethrown.
The four categories, ranked highest to lowest
- 4-5-6 — an automatic win, unconditionally, regardless of what the other player rolls.
- Triples (three matching dice) — ranked by value, 6-6-6 highest down to 1-1-1 lowest, and any triple beats any "point" roll below it.
- A pair plus a point (two matching dice, one different) — ranked by the value of the unmatched die, 6 highest down to 2.
- 1-2-3 — an automatic loss, unconditionally, regardless of what the other player rolls.
Any roll that doesn't fall into one of these four categories — three different numbers that aren't 1-2-3, with no pair — scores nothing at all and must be rerolled, by that player alone, until it resolves into one of the four categories above.
Worked example 1: two points compared directly
Player A rolls 5-5-3 — a pair of 5s with a point of 3. Player B rolls 4-4-6 — a pair of 4s with a point of 6. Neither roll is a triple or one of the two automatic outcomes, so this comes down to comparing points directly: 6 beats 3, so Player B wins outright, regardless of the fact that both rolls happened to be pairs of a similar "shape."
Worked example 2: a triple against a strong point
Player A rolls 3-3-3 — a triple. Player B rolls 5-5-6 — a pair of 5s with a point of 6, the highest possible point value. Even though 6 is the best possible point a non-triple roll can produce, it still loses here: triples outrank every point roll without exception, so Player A's 3-3-3 wins despite being a "weaker-looking" number than a point of 6.
Worked example 3: 4-5-6 beating an actual triple
Player A rolls 4-5-6 outright. Player B rolls 6-6-6 — the highest possible triple. Under the standard hierarchy, 4-5-6 sits above every triple, including the highest one, so Player A wins the roll even though 6-6-6 looks unbeatable at first glance. This is the single most surprising result in the entire game to new players, since it's easy to assume "three sixes" must be the best possible roll — it isn't; 4-5-6 is.
Worked example 4: a roll that has to be thrown again
Player A rolls 2-4-6 — three different numbers, no pair, and not a match for either 4-5-6 or 1-2-3. This roll doesn't fall into any of the four scoring categories at all, so nothing is compared yet — Player A simply rerolls all three dice on their own, independent of what Player B has already rolled, until a genuinely scorable combination comes up.
Worked example 5: the banker variant's extra automatic rolls
Some tables play a "banker" version where one player rolls against every other player's bets at once rather than a simple two-player comparison. Under this variant, a pair of non-6s together with a single 6 (for example, 3-3-6) is scored as an additional automatic win for the banker, on top of 4-5-6 and triples — and a pair of non-1s together with a single 1 (say, 4-4-1) is scored as an additional automatic loss. This is a genuinely different, named rule from the plain two-player comparison game above, not a misreading of the same one; a table should agree in advance which version — plain point-comparison or banker-with-extra-automatics — is actually in use before real money changes hands.
Why the auto-loss category matters as much as the auto-win
1-2-3 is exactly as absolute as 4-5-6, just in the opposite direction — a roll of 1-2-3 loses instantly no matter what the opponent rolled, even a weak point like 3-3-2. This symmetry is easy to forget in the moment, since players naturally focus on remembering the "big win" roll and underweight the "instant loss" one, right up until it costs them a round they otherwise would have won on points.
Worked example 6: two triples compared against each other
Player A rolls 2-2-2. Player B rolls 5-5-5. Both are triples, so neither the automatic-win nor automatic-loss categories apply, and this comes down to comparing the two triples directly by value: 5 beats 2, so Player B's roll wins. This is worth spelling out because it's easy to assume "any triple is basically unbeatable" once a player has seen a low triple beat a strong point roll earlier in a session — a triple's rank among other triples still matters when two players both roll one.
Worked example 7: why 1-2-3 never gets a second chance to compare
Player A rolls 6-6-5 — a pair of 6s with the highest possible point value. Player B then rolls 1-2-3. It's tempting to think Player B's turn should still get compared point-for-point against Player A's strong roll, since 6-6-5 is already on the table — but it doesn't matter what Player A rolled at all. 1-2-3 loses that player's stake outright, exactly as unconditionally as 4-5-6 wins it, with no comparison step involved. The two automatic categories are the only rolls in the entire game that skip the comparison stage completely; every other combination (triples and points alike) has to actually be measured against the other roll to determine a winner.
The fastest way to judge a roll
- Check first for 4-5-6 (automatic win) or 1-2-3 (automatic loss) — these override everything else immediately.
- Check for a triple next — any triple beats any point roll, ranked among themselves by value.
- If neither, check for a pair plus a point — the unmatched die's value is what gets compared.
- If none of the above apply at all (three different numbers, no pair), the roll doesn't count — reroll and start the comparison over.
