Sprouts Rules
Sprouts starts with nothing but a handful of dots on paper and grows an entire tangled diagram purely from two players taking turns — every single move adds both a connecting line and a brand new dot, which means the board is never emptying or simplifying the way most pencil-and-paper games do; it only ever gets more crowded until it genuinely can't anymore.
Setup
Draw a small number of dots on a blank sheet of paper — most games start with somewhere between three and six, since the total game length scales directly with however many you begin with.
Playing a Move
On your turn, draw one line connecting two different dots, or connecting a single dot to itself in a loop, with two hard restrictions: the line can't cross itself, cross any other line already drawn, or touch any dot other than its own two endpoints, and no dot may ever have more than three lines total connected to it. After drawing your line, you place one brand-new dot somewhere along that line's length — this new dot immediately counts as having two lines already attached to it (the two segments of the line it was placed on), leaving it just one more available connection before it, too, is "full."
Winning
The player who makes the very last legal move — after which the opponent genuinely has no legal move available anywhere on the board — wins the game. Because every dot is capped at exactly three connections and every move both uses up connection capacity and adds a small amount back via the new dot, the game is mathematically guaranteed to end; it can never, under any sequence of moves, continue forever.

A "misère" variant reverses the win condition entirely — instead of the player who makes the last legal move winning, that player LOSES, and the goal becomes forcing your opponent into the position of having no choice but to make the final move themselves. This single reversal, applied to otherwise identical rules, produces a genuinely different strategic game, since forcing a position rather than exploiting one becomes the central goal.
