Dominoes (Basics) Scoring, Explained


Basic dominoes scoring is simple in concept — count the pips left in the losing hands — but the totals can climb fast with double tiles, and it's worth being clear up front that this end-of-hand counting method is a different scoring tradition from "Fives and Threes" style dominoes, which scores points during play instead of only at the end.

The core method: count what's left, not what was played

When a player goes out (plays their last tile) or a game is blocked, every other player counts the total pip value of every domino remaining in their own hand — including doubles, counted at their full pip total (a double-six counts as 12, not 6). That combined total across every losing hand is awarded to the round's winner.

Worked example 1: an ordinary going-out hand, three players

Player A empties their hand first. Player B is left holding 4-2, 6-6, and 3-1: that's 6 + 12 + 4 = 22 pips. Player C is left holding 5-5 and 0-3: that's 10 + 3 = 13 pips. Player A scores the combined total of both losing hands: 22 + 13 = 35 points for that round.

Worked example 2: doubles inflate a hand fast

Player A goes out. Player B is left holding only two tiles: 6-6 and 5-5 — just two dominoes, but worth 12 + 10 = 22 points, more than a hand of four or five small non-double tiles might total. This is why holding onto a double late in a hand is riskier than it looks: a single unplayed double-six is worth as much as several ordinary tiles combined.

Worked example 3: a blocked game, decided by lowest hand

Nobody can play, and the boneyard is empty. Player A holds 4-1 and 2-0: 5 + 2 = 7 pips. Player B holds 6-3, 5-2, and 6-6: 9 + 7 + 12 = 28 pips. Player C holds only 1-1: 2 pips. Player C has the lowest total (2), so Player C is declared the winner of the blocked round — and is credited with the sum of the OTHER players' pip totals, not their own: 7 + 28 = 35 points, exactly as if Player C had gone out normally.

Worked example 4: a tie for lowest in a blocked game

The boneyard is empty and nobody can move again. Player A holds 3-0 (3 pips) and Player B also holds exactly 3 pips' worth of tiles (say, a single 3-0 as well, in a larger game with duplicate values distributed differently across a bigger set). Since both are tied for the lowest total, neither is awarded the round's points — the round simply ends with no score recorded for anyone, and the next hand is dealt fresh.

Worked example 5: tracking a match across several rounds to a target

A group agrees to play to 150 points. Round 1 ends with Player A winning 35 points (running total: A 35, B 0, C 0). Round 2 ends with Player B winning 48 points (running total: A 35, B 48, C 0). Round 3 ends with Player A winning again, this time 61 points (running total: A 96, B 48, C 0). Round 4 ends with Player A winning 58 more points, crossing the 150 target at 154 — the match ends immediately at that point, without needing an exact hit on 150; the target is a threshold to cross, not a number to land on precisely.

Why this differs from "Fives and Threes" scoring

Some domino variants (commonly called Fives and Threes, or Muggins) score points continuously during play, every time the open ends of the layout sum to a multiple of 5 or 3, rather than only totting up pips at the very end of a hand. That's a genuinely different scoring system built around a different domino game, not a variant of the end-of-hand pip-counting method described above — a table using "dominoes scoring" loosely should confirm which of these two traditions is actually being played before totals stop matching what either side expected.

Worked example 6: a four-player round with an overdraw penalty in effect

In a Draw-rules game, Player D drew two tiles on a turn when only one was actually required (the first tile drawn was already playable, but Player D drew a second one anyway). Under the written overdraw rule, that extra tile stays face-up in Player D's hand for the rest of the game. When the round ends, Player D's face-up penalty tile still counts fully toward their pip total exactly like any other tile in hand — say a 5-3, worth 8 pips — it simply doesn't get hidden from the other players' view while the round plays out. The scoring math itself doesn't change because of the overdraw; only the visibility of that one tile does.

Worked example 7: comparing a close finish across two scoring conventions

Player A goes out holding zero tiles. Player B is left with 6-4 (10 pips) and 2-2 (4 pips), for 14 total. Under the standard end-of-hand method described above, Player A simply scores that full 14 points. Under a Fives-and-Threes-style running scoresheet, by contrast, Player A might already have banked several small in-play scores of 3, 5, or 8 points during the hand itself, entirely independent of what Player B ends up holding — the two systems can produce very different-looking running totals for what looks like a similarly dominant hand, which is exactly why confusing the two traditions produces the biggest dominoes scoring arguments.

The fastest way to score a hand without missing a double

  1. Count every domino left in each losing hand individually, tile by tile.
  2. For any double, count its FULL pip value (both ends added together), never just one side.
  3. Add every losing player's total together — that combined sum goes to the winner.
  4. In a blocked game, first find whoever has the single lowest hand total; that player is credited with everyone else's combined total, exactly as a normal go-out would score.
  5. If two or more players tie for lowest in a blocked game, no points are awarded to anyone that round.
