Why the Cribbage Board Looks the Way It Does


Hand someone a cribbage board who's never seen one and the first question is almost always "why does it look like that?" Two long rows of tiny holes, a scatter of pegs, sometimes a mysterious mark partway down one row — it looks more like a piece of lab equipment than a scoring device. It's actually a purpose-built solution to a problem that's specific to cribbage: the game scores in small, frequent bursts throughout a hand rather than in one lump total at the end, and a peg-and-hole track handles that far better than writing numbers on paper does.

The game itself is roughly 400 years old, and the board came with it

Cribbage is generally credited to the English poet and courtier Sir John Suckling, who developed it in the early 1600s as a refinement of an older English game called Noddy. Suckling didn't invent scoring-by-cards from nothing — Noddy already used a scoring board of its own — but he's credited with adding two things that define cribbage today: the crib itself (the extra hand each player contributes cards to) and the physical scoring board that tracks points as they're won. That's an unusually well-documented origin for a folk card game; most traditional card games don't have a named inventor at all, let alone one tied to a specific decade.

Why holes and pegs instead of writing numbers down

A running paper score works fine for a game where points arrive occasionally. Cribbage isn't that game — a single hand can produce a dozen or more separate scoring events (pairs, runs, fifteens, the crib, "his heels," "his nobs") in the space of about thirty seconds, and a table that's counting out loud while also trying to write down a running total tends to lose track of which number is current. A peg on a physical track solves this by making the current score a position rather than a written figure: you don't have to remember what number you're on, you can just look at where the peg sits. Moving a peg forward by exactly the right number of holes is also a much smaller failure mode than a subtraction or addition error on paper, because there's nothing to recalculate — you're just counting holes forward from wherever the peg already is.

Two pegs per player is the actual clever part

Most boards give each player two pegs rather than one, and this is the detail that trips up first-time players the most. The back peg marks the player's score before the current count; the front peg marks the score after it. Leapfrogging the back peg over the front peg with each new count does two things at once: it moves the score forward, and it leaves a visible, physical record of exactly how many points were just scored, since the gap between the two pegs is the answer. That's a feature a paper score sheet genuinely can't replicate without adding a second column — the board does it as a side effect of how it's built.

121 is two full laps of the track, not an arbitrary number

The finishing target of 121 wasn't always standard — early cribbage circles commonly played to 61 points as a "short game," and boards were built to match, with two rows of 30 holes plus a game hole giving exactly 61 for a single pass. The shift toward 121 as the standard target happened gradually, mostly in the early 1900s, as more tables adopted a "twice around the board" full game instead of the shorter version. A standard modern board reflects that history directly: each player's track runs 60 holes across two rows, doubled to 120, plus one final game hole at 121 — the physical board is, in effect, a diagram of exactly how the scoring convention evolved, not a number someone picked for its own sake.

The skunk line exists because winning margins matter too

Look closely at a cribbage board and there's often a mark — sometimes a line, sometimes a small "S" — sitting between the 90th and 91st holes. That's the skunk line, and it flags something the final score alone doesn't: a player who reaches 121 while their opponent is still short of 91 has won by a big enough margin that it traditionally counts as a bigger win, sometimes worth double in informal scoring or match play. A second, rarer line near 61 marks a "double skunk," an even larger margin. Where the term "skunk" itself comes from is genuinely unclear — one story traces it to a 19th-century bet in Montana over eating an actual skunk after a bad loss — but that story is undocumented folklore rather than a confirmed origin, and it's honest to treat it that way rather than repeat it as settled history.

Boards for three or four players need somewhere to put the extra runners

Two-player cribbage is the traditional form, and a standard two-track board is built around exactly that. Boards made for three- or four-handed cribbage add extra lanes, or route additional players' pegs through shared lanes in different colors, so every player's position stays visually distinct on a board that was fundamentally designed for two racers rather than three or four. That's also why three- and four-player cribbage tends to feel more chaotic to track by eye even with a proper board — the underlying design assumption of the whole object is a two-lane race, and everything past that is an adaptation rather than the original plan.

What this means if you're scoring on a phone instead of a board

None of this design history disappears just because a table is using a digital scorekeeper instead of a physical board — the running total to 121, the crib swapping sides each hand, and the two-peg logic of "score since last time" are all still the actual shape of the game, whether they're represented by wooden pegs or a number on a screen. Why do some cheap travel cribbage boards have folding halves instead of one solid board? Purely portability — a hinged two-piece board is far easier to fit in a bag or box than a single rigid board long enough to hold a full 121-point track, and the scoring mechanics work identically either way once it's unfolded and laid flat.

Do all cribbage boards use the same hole spacing? No — hole spacing and board length vary a lot between manufacturers, and some novelty boards run the track in a spiral or a non-linear shape purely for visual style. The only thing that has to stay consistent for standard play is the hole count itself: 60 per player per lap, 121 to finish.
